ARC by Colin Rose

Returning to the forest almost forty years since he first installed his sculpture ‘Ting’, artist Colin Rose worked over a series of months resulting in a new large-scale site-specific sculpture. Due to tree health and time spent with foresters, engineers, and discussions with ecologists and wildlife rangers, a new site was selected in which the artist created Grizedale Forest’s latest and largest sculpture titled ‘Arc’.
Artist Colin Rose says of the sculptures:
‘'Ting' originally was a work derived from ideas of sound relating to form in response to its location, the landscape. With the salvaged elements, I sought to create a new work with a calm floating quality that people could both view and interact with. An edge that defined an inner and outer space like a ripple in a pool of water. Initially there was an offer to re site the work in a mature oak of which I was very pleased. However never built to last, the work over time went out of true from its original pure circle due to its own weight and was not possible to repair. Rather than scrap the sections I was attracted to re-use them and re-site the pieces horizontally in the Forest as a new work.’
Located on a new section of the much-loved Carron Crag Trail, the work can be seen from various vantage points. Working with Grizedale’s wonderful team of volunteers, Colin planted over 600 willow stems last month to form the start of a growing enclosure around the new sculpture.
