For three and a half decades Grizedale Forest has been closely associated with the practice of making sculpture and art in the forest environment. This working forest landscape has become synonymous locally, nationally and internationally as a place where artists create new work in response to this particular situation. Many of the early sculptures have long since decayed, and as with the cycle of growth and renewal in the forest itself, the Forestry Commission is now working with the next generation of sculptors and artists to develop new proposals and possible works for the future.

The exhibition installed across the Visitor Centre introduces the ten artists who we are now working with at Grizedale Forest for the first time. New to Grizedale Forest, these artists represent a diverse range of sculptural practice and artistic enquiry. All consider the landscape, our relationship to it and interaction with it as fundamental components of their research and making.

The exhibition showcases a diverse selection of work including sculpture, installation, drawing, photography, traditional 16mm film and the latest HD video. The artwork presented introduces the practice of each of the artists and the exhibition combines new and existing works. The existing works relate to the artists’ interests in landscape, often connected directly with the forest. The new works have been created as part of the artists’ current research and development at Grizedale Forest.

The artists featured in this exhibition have all been commissioned to develop new site-specific work for Grizedale Forest. All the artists are currently researching and developing new and unique proposals, having explored the forest they have begun to respond to this unique environment. This exhibition provides a window into their work, allowing new and established audiences at Grizedale Forest a first encounter with these artists’ work.

art roots Grizedale is a major new commissioning programme at Grizedale Forest led by Forestry Commission England.
